**Thanks to all who have bought chinchillas from me and given them a great home!!**
I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about keeping a chinchilla as a pet.
I've been a small chinchilla breeder for 15+ years and am willing to share information that will help other small breeders.
ABOUT CHINCHILLAS:
Chinchillas are from South America in the Andes Mountains. In the wild they live in a colony or "herd" with as many as 100 chinchillas in the group. They can live up to 18 years and have extremely soft fur. An average chinchilla pregnancy lasts about 111 days. Chinchilla kits (babies) are born fully furred, with eyes open and a full set of teeth.
Chinchilla babies need to nurse from their mother a minimum of 6-8 weeks. After weaning they are ready to go to new homes.
Watch your chinchilla daily for health issues. Notice how the dung pellets are formed because normal chin pellets are a good indicator of health. They should be fairly dry and well formed. Smaller than average indicates constipation or low food intake and mushy or mucus on stool could indicate stress or eating food that?s too rich (too many treats), cut back to chinchilla pellets and hay only --restrict the treats. Chinchillas should have food available at all times, at least food pellets, because of their high metabolism.
Eyes should be bright and fur well groomed. A chin with greasy spiky hair or that huddles in the corner all the time, especially in the evening when it should be playing has health issues or stress issues which could be serious. Check with your local vet or spend extra time observing to see if you can find and correct the problem before it becomes a serious health threat.
Feed hay to your chins (up to 25% of their diet if possible or at least one handful every day), it?s the closest to the natural in the wild diet and will help keep them healthy. Extreme lethargy is NOT normal and I suggest you find a local vet that is willing to treat exotics in case of an emergency.
Temperatures above 80 degrees can be deadly for a chin with their thick fur coat, during excessive hot weather a fan aimed at a portion of their cage would improve air circulation and give them ?a cool spot? if they need it. The temperature in the room a chinchilla is kept should never exceed 80 degrees nor should the cage be in direct sunlight.
Chinchillas are most active early evening, napping through most of the day. They are intelligent and can learn word commands and tricks if time is taken to work with them.
The average adult chinchilla can weigh up to two pounds when mature. A cage with dimensions of at least 18 inches by 24 inches would be suitable, commercial cages for pet chinchillas with several levels are best to keep them active and healthy.
The Internet is a fabulous resource. Research all you can to make sure that a chinchilla is an ideal pet for you.
